Growing up, my family always had lots of pets. We raised dogs, cats, chickens, cows, goats, parrots, and even sugar gliders. I’m probably missing some, but you get the idea. I remember we used to get these cardboard shakers of carpet freshener to dust the house before any visitors came, to get rid of the barnyard smell in the house. Who knows how many brain cells we killed off with all the artificial fragrance those things had!

So back in 2018 when we moved into the farmhouse we’re in now, I started looking up ways to freshen up our carpet naturally. Turns out, it’s cheap and easy to make it yourself.

Why use carpet freshener

There is something therapeutic about shaking that white powder all over your carpet, it could almost be compared to throwing plates at a wall. Or the sheer pleasure you get when you vacuum it up. Aside from the mental health of it, it’s also a great way to absorb nasty smells, and neutralize your carpet.

People’s feet are gross whether you live on a farm or not. Think about it like this, when you walk into a public place, just imagine all the bathrooms the people around you have walked in, and now you’re walking where they walked. I just shuttered. I know you’re not eating off your carpet, but if you have kids, then they sure are. So for the sake of the children, dust your carpets!

And for a personal testimony, several years ago, one of my sons got pin worms, and when I learned how easily they spread I nearly burnt the house down. But when I learned that cloves kills the eggs, I filled a jar with baking soda, clove powder, and clove essential oil, and anointed the entire house to kill off those demons.

So if that’s not a good enough reason why you should freshen your carpet, I don’t know how else to convince you. But whether you live on a farm, keep pets, or have children, freshening your carpet should be apart of your regular cleaning routine.

Ingredients

There is only two main ingredients, baking soda, and essential oils. You could add spices too if you’re so inclined. We just buy the big bag of baking soda at Costco, but you might not want to use your expensive essential oils in something you’re going to vacuum up in 20 minutes. I get all my essential oils for soap making and cleaning products from Azure Standard they have a good selection and I trust their integrity.

I tend to favor citrus oils because of their bright, clean smell, but I’ll mix it up with the seasons. Cinnamon and evergreen oils are fun scents for the holidays.

Another great option is a blend like Theives, (a Young Living brand) it’s more expensive, but I like to think it helps kill viruses during cold and flu season. And going back to my personal testimony from above, you should stock a bottle of clove oil too, just incase.

Shake it!

Ok guys, it’s time to turn on Taylor and “shake it off!” Sorry, I had to… But seriously, If you could walk away from this post only learning one thing, let it be this. Sprouting lids. I purchased these lids awhile back to use them for sprouting, but then had a lightbulb moment one day when I was sprinkling my carpet freshener by hand, that these lids would make the job of dusting so much easier, and would help disperse it more evenly so I wasn’t using as much per use. Since that day I always keep a shaker jar full and ready for whenever someone plans on stopping by. (if you’re curious about what rug we have its the Loloi II Loren Terracotta / Sky.)

Bonus tip

Kids love this job! If you’re trying to motivate your kids in the cleaning department, then this is a great task suitable for any age.
